Pets age faster than humans. In seeing your veterinarian annually, you have the opportunity to discuss your pet’s health. Prior to your pet’s wellness exam, note any changes that you may want to discuss with your veterinarian. Annual pet wellness exams can help detect concerning medical conditions and allow us to put together a plan of treatment.
During your pet’s wellness exam, we can perform:
- Complete dental exam
- Full body physical exam
- Heartworm check
- Lab tests (blood work, urine/stool testing, and parasite evaluation)
Pet exams
Our physicians will examine your pet from head-to-tail, inspecting all of the central organs, checking joint functioning, and recording vital statistics to ensure normality. If there are any irregularities, lab tests or X-rays may be necessary. During exams, it is also a good idea to discuss diet and nutrition, as diet plays a vital role in maintaining good health. Pet owners are encouraged to consult with the veterinarian about their pet’s current diet and eating habits and discuss healthier options (if any).’
Vaccinations
Heartland Animal Hospital, we believe that one of the most important aspects of caring for your pet’s health is vaccinating against possible diseases. There are a variety of diseases which affect your pets, so proper vaccination is vital to protecting them from many types of illnesses.
It is important to consult with us about the unique risks of living in our region. We will be happy to discuss the benefits of protecting your pet with vaccinations, as well as, providing you with information on the required vaccinations for your pet.
Sick Visits/Office visits

We are here for you if your pet is experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, limping, coughing, weight loss, itching, or any other illness needing care. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms or has developed any abnormal behavior, please inform your veterinarian. Diagnostic imaging and labs are used when a disease or condition is suspected. This non-invasive method of obtaining information allows our veterinarian to diagnosis the severity, and/or location of a condition or disease. After diagnosis, our physicians will discuss with you the best plan of action for your pet.

What does surgery involve?
Surgery for pets is very similar to surgery for humans. During the pre-operative appointment, the necessary preparations for surgery will be discussed. If your pet is having anesthesia, fasting will be required, and we request that you inform us of any medications your pet is taking.
We believe that pain management is a critical aspect of recovery. We make an added effort to provide your pet with superior comfort. If we feel that post-operative pain management would be beneficial to your pet, we will prescribe additional medication.
Upon the completion of surgery, you will be informed of all care instructions for recovery. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s surgery, or would like to schedule a surgery, please contact our office.

In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population.
In an added effort to provide your pet with quality care, we offer pet dental services in our veterinary office. It is estimated that 80% of pets exhibit the beginning stages of periodontal disease by age 3, which is why dental exams and teeth cleanings are essential. Also, studies indicate that pets with good oral hygiene tend to live 2 to 4 years longer than pets whose dental care is overlooked. While periodontal disease is entirely preventable, when left untreated it can lead to cardiac disease, kidney infection, liver infection, or stroke.
Reasons for regular dental check-ups:
- Avoid tooth loss due to periodontal disease
- Help your pet avert unnecessary pain
- Help your pet maintain healthy and functional teeth
- Improve foul breath
- Prevent potential damage to the brain, heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys
What does a pet dental exam involve?
Pets can experience many of the same dental issues that humans do, including gingivitis, periodontal disease, necessary tooth extraction, and deep scaling. Regular dental exams and cleanings can help you avoid the costliness of involved dental procedures and can help prevent your pet from unnecessary suffering.
Pet dental exams involve teeth cleaning and polishing. Additional services provided include sedation dentistry and dental X-rays. If more serious conditions are discovered, tooth extraction might be required.
During your pet’s teeth cleaning, we will gently clean the surface of the teeth with an ultrasonic scaler that cleans using the vibration of sound waves and water. After scaling the teeth, we polish your pet’s teeth, and offer the application of sealant, to complete their dental cleaning.
If you would like to schedule a professional dental cleaning for your pet, call our office to schedule a FREE dental consultation appointment, and allow your pet to experience a healthy smile!
In-House Laboratory
We can perform many diagnostic tests quickly and efficiently with our in-house laboratory equipment. We offer a wide range of tests, including, but not limited to, heartworm testing, urinalysis, parasite screening, and full comprehensive bloodwork panels. The best part of being able to run laboratory tests in-house is that we can diagnose your pet much sooner than if we had to send the blood work out to another laboratory. Whenever your pet is not feeling well, we can offer you results more quickly.
Onsite Diagnostics
We have state-of-the-art diagnostic tools that allow our staff to diagnose your pets’ condition or illness better. It is our commitment to stay on the cutting edge of diagnostic technology.
Having these advanced diagnostic tools allows us to examine specific areas more carefully and provide a quicker and more accurate diagnosis. We use many tools such as CT, x-rays, ultrasound, blood pressure, EKG, echocardiograms, tonometry, lab tests, and various other tests.
Exotic Animal Care
If you’re in need of a vet for your exotic animal, you’re in luck. Our Marion and Fairfax location provide care for many exotic and non-traditional pets. Whether you want to discuss how you can create a comfortable habitat for your pet or you have questions about what to feed them, we’re here to help. We offer preventive care, nutritional advice, and general care recommendations for a wide variety of exotic pets.
Microchipping
Heartland Animal Hospital we encourage microchipping for all pets, including indoor only animals. Even the most responsible pet owner could leave the front door or garage door open or forget to close the gate, resulting in a lost pet. Microchipping your beloved pet could be the difference between having your pet returned and not being able to find them.
There is a simple, safe, and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should he or she ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip underneath your pet’s fur. It is a painless and relatively fast procedure and is completely safe.
Anytime your pet’s microchip is scanned it will indicate the microchip company. The microchip company can then be contacted to secure the information necessary to get in touch with you.
Nutritional Counseling
Nutrition can play a critical role in your pet’s overall health. When prescribed a proper veterinary diet, food can aid with conditions such as pancreatitis, diabetes, allergies, and urinary health.
Additionally, obesity is a common problem among pets, as it can be easy to overfeed. Being overweight can cause serious health issues. With proper diet and exercise, all pets should be able to meet their dietary needs and stay within a healthy weight range.
Heartland Animal Hospital offers nutritional counseling. If you have any questions about your pet’s diet or would like more information about your pet’s nutritional needs, please contact us today.
Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Prevention
Parasites pose a variety of health issues for your pets, who can be very susceptible to certain parasites (flea, tick, and heartworms) depending on age, region, and other factors.
Heartland Animal Hospital, we emphasize the importance of preventing parasites. Through preventative measures, you can successfully protect your pet. Pets that are not protected can develop parasites, which may lead to serious problems.
Our goal is to nurture happy, healthy pets. To maintain essential pet health, we recommend a monthly prescribed flea, tick and heartworm prevention year-round. For canines we recommend an all-in-one chewable tablet called Simparica Trio. For felines we recommend a topical prevention called Revolution Plus.
